Inseparable Prepositions & the Vav Conjunction
בְּ, לְ, כְּ and מִן — how they attach, how their vowels change, and the many faces of וְ “and”.
Biblical Hebrew has four one-letter prepositions that never stand alone — they glue onto the next word. The most flexible of these is וְ (wə, "and"), which has more faces than a classroom full of students. This article teaches the prepositions בְּ, לְ, כְּ, מִן and the many forms of וְ.
The four inseparable prepositions
| Preposition | Meaning | Standalone concept | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| בְּ | in, at, with, by | be | בַּבַּיִת (ba-bbayith) | in the house |
| לְ | to, for, belonging to | le | לַמֶּלֶךְ (la-mmelekh) | to the king |
| כְּ | like, as, about | ke | כַּסּוּס (ka-ssus) | like the horse |
| מִן | from | min | מִן הָעִיר (min hā-ʿîr) | from the city |
Vowel changes
When attached to a word, the vowel of the preposition can change depending on the first letter or the stress of the following word:
| Form | When it appears | Example |
|---|---|---|
| בְּ | before most consonants | בְּבַיִת (be-vayith) |
| בַּ | before הַ article | בַּבַּיִת (ba-bbayith) |
| בָּ | before gutturals / ר | בָּאָרֶץ (bā-ʾārets) |
| לְ | before most consonants | לְמֶלֶךְ (le-melekh) |
| לַ | before הַ article | לַמֶּלֶךְ (la-mmelekh) |
| לָ | before gutturals / ר | לָעָם (lā-ʿām) |
| כְּ | before most consonants | כְּמוֹ |
| כַּ | before הַ article | כַּסּוּס (ka-ssus) |
| כָּ | before gutturals / ר | כָּאֵל (kā-ʾēl) |
| מִ | shortened form of מִן | מִבַּיִת (mi-bbayith) |
| מֵ | before some gutturals / vowels | מֵאֱלֹהִים (me-ʾelohim) |
וְ — "and" and much more
The conjunction וְ (wə, "and") is the most common word in the Hebrew Bible. It is usually attached to the next word as a prefix.
Basic form: וְ
Before most consonants:
| Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| וְהָאָרֶץ | wə-hā-ʾārets | and the earth |
| וַיֹּאמֶר | way-yōmer | and he said |
| וְלֹא | wə-lōʾ | and not |
וַ — the vav consecutive (common in narrative)
Before an imperfect verb, וְ often becomes וַ (wa) and causes dagesh forte in the next letter. This is the famous vav-consecutive that drives biblical narrative:
| Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| וַיִּקְרָא | way-yiq-rāʾ | and he called |
| וַתֹּאמֶר | wat-tōmer | and she said |
| וַנֵּלֶךְ | wan-nelekh | and we went |
💡 Tip: וַ + yod imperfect = וַיִּ... (way-yi...). וַ + tav imperfect = וַתִּ... (wat-ti...). The doubling of the prefix consonant is the tell-tale sign.
ו before labials
Before the labial consonants ב, מ, פ, the vav becomes a shuruq (וּ):
| Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| וּבְבֵיתוֹ | ū-ve-vêthô | and in his house |
| וּמִן | ū-min | and from |
| וּפְתִיחַ | ū-fethiaḥ | and an opening |
ו before shewa
Before consonants with shewa, ו often becomes וּ (û):
| Hebrew | Pronunciation | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| וּבְכָל | ū-ve-khol | and in all |
| וּלְךָ | ū-lĕkhā | and to you |
Prepositions with pronominal suffixes
The inseparable prepositions can take pronoun suffixes directly:
| Suffix | בְּ = | לְ = | מִן = |
|---|---|---|---|
| I / me | בִּי (bî) | לִי (lî) | מִמֶּנִּי (mimmennî) |
| you (m. sg.) | בְּךָ (bĕkhā) | לְךָ (lĕkhā) | מִמְּךָ (mimmĕkhā) |
| you (f. sg.) | בָּךְ (bākh) | לָּךְ (lākh) | מִמֵּךְ (mimmēkh) |
| him | בּוֹ (bô) | לוֹ (lô) | מִמֶּנּוּ (mimmennû) |
| her | בָּהּ (bāh) | לָהּ (lāh) | מִמֶּנָּה (mimmennāh) |
| us | בָּנוּ (bānû) | לָנוּ (lānû) | מִמֶּנּוּ (mimmennû) |
These suffixes are worth learning gradually; they appear on almost every page of the Bible.
✅ Key takeaways
- The inseparable prepositions are בְּ, לְ, כְּ, מִן.
- They attach to the next word and change vowels before gutturals, ר, or the article.
- וְ ("and") is a prefix with many forms: וְ, וַ, וּ.
- וַ + imperfect verb = vav-consecutive narrative ("and he/she/they...").
- All four prepositions can carry pronominal suffixes.
