The Past Tense — ikh hob gezen

Forming the past with hobn/zayn + participle, and which verbs take zayn.

beginner · 3 min read

Yiddish past tense is built with two helper verbs: האָבן (hobn, to have) and זײַן (zayn, to be). Most verbs use האָבן; verbs of motion and a few others use זײַן. The main verb appears as a participle at the end of the clause.

The structure

Subject + האָבן/זײַן (conjugated) + object/adverbs + past participle

YiddishTransliterationMeaning
איך האָב געזאָגטikh hob gezogtI said / have said
ער איז געקומעןer iz gekumenHe came / has come
מיר זענען געגאַנגעןmir zenen gegangenWe went / have gone

The past participle

Most Yiddish past participles begin with גע־ (ge-) and end in ־ן or ־ט:

InfinitivePast participleMeaning
זאָגן (zogn)געזאָגט (gezogt)said
לערנען (lernen)געלערנט (gelernt)learned
שרײַבן (shraybn)געשריבן (geshribn)written
הערן (hern)געהערט (gehert)heard
גיין (geyn)געגאַנגען (gegangen)gone
קומען (kumen)געקומען (gekumen)come

💡 Pattern: For weak verbs, participle = גע + stem + -ט. For strong verbs, the vowel may change (geshribn, gekumen, gegangen).

Verbs that use האָבן

Most transitive verbs (verbs that take a direct object) use האָבן:

זי האָט געלערנטzi hot gelerntShe learned
מיר האָבן געגעסןmir hobn gegesnWe ate

Verbs that use זײַן
