Yiddish Word Order (Verb-Second)

The verb always second in statements, first in yes/no questions, last in subordinate clauses.

Yiddish word order follows the Germanic "verb-second" rule: in a normal statement, the verb is the second element. In yes/no questions and commands, it comes first. In subordinate clauses, it slides to the end.

Main clauses — verb second

In a statement, the conjugated verb must be the second major element. The first element can be the subject, an adverb, a time expression, or an object.

First elementVerbRestMeaning
איךלערןייִדישI learn Yiddish.
ייִדישלערןאיךYiddish I learn. (emphasis)
הײַנטלערןמיר ייִדישToday we learn Yiddish.
אין שולזענעןדי קינדערIn school are the children.

💡 Key idea: "Verb second" means the verb is second in the sentence, not necessarily second word. "הײַנט" (today) is one sentence element.

Questions — verb first

Yes/no questions put the verb first:

YiddishTransliterationMeaning
לערנסטו ייִדיש?lernstu yidish?Do you learn Yiddish?
ביסטו אַ תּלמיד?bistu a talmid?Are you a student?
האָט ער אַ בוך?hot er a bukh?Does he have a book?

💡 Note: "לערנסטו" = לערנסט + דו. In spoken Yiddish, the pronoun often clings to the verb.

Commands — verb first

Imperatives also put the verb first:

YiddishTransliterationMeaning
קום הער!kum her!Come here!
זאָג עפּעס!zog epes!Say something!
גיב מיר דאָס בוך!gib mir dos bukh!Give me the book!

Subordinate clauses

In clauses introduced by words like אַז (az, that), ווײַל (vayl, because), ווען (ven, when), Yiddish keeps the normal subject-verb-object (verb-second) order, unlike German:

YiddishTransliterationMeaning
איך ווייס, אַז דו לערנסט ייִדישikh veys, az du lernst yidishI know that you learn Yiddish.
ער קומט, ווײַל ער האָט צײַטer kumt, vayl er hot tsaytHe comes because he has time.
ווען איך בין אין שול, לערן איךven ikh bin in shul, lern ikhWhen I am in school, I learn.

💡 Pattern: In Yiddish, subordinate clauses generally maintain normal verb-second order.

Word order with participles

In the past tense, the helper verb (האָבן/זײַן) is second, and the participle goes to the end:

YiddishTransliterationMeaning
איך האָב אַ בוך געלייענטikh hob a bukh geleyentI read a book.
זי איז אין שול געוועןzi iz in shul gevenShe was in school.

✅ Key takeaways
