Ezekiel 23

vayehi devar-Adonai elay lemor

The word of GOD came to me:

ben-adam shetayim nashim benot em-akhat hayu

O mortal, once there were two women, daughters of one mother.

vattiznenah vemitsrayim binurehen zanu shammah mo'akhu shedehen vesham issu dadde betulehen

They played the whore in Egypt; they played the whore while still young. There their breasts were squeezed, and there their virgin nipples were handled.

ushemotan oholah haggedolah ve'oholivah akhotah vattihyenah li vatteladnah banim uvanot ushemotan shomeron oholah virushalai͏m oholivah

Their names were: the elder one, Oholah; and her sister, Oholibah. They became Mine, and they bore sons and daughters. As for their names, Oholah is Samaria, and Oholibah is Jerusalem.

vattizen oholah takhtay vattegav al-me'ahaveha el-ashur qerovim

Oholah whored while she was Mine, and she lusted after her lovers, after the Assyrians, warriors

levushe tekhelet pakhot useganim bakhure khemed kullam parashim rokheve susim

clothed in blue, governors and prefects, cavalry troops—all of them handsome young fellows.

vattitten taznuteha alehem mivkhar bene-ashur kullam uvekhol asher-agevah bekhol-gillulehem nitma'ah

She bestowed her favors upon them—upon all the pick of the Assyrians—and defiled herself with all their fetishes after which she lusted.

ve'et-taznuteha mimmitsrayim lo azavah ki otah shakhevu vinureha vehemmah issu dadde vetuleha vayyishpekhu taznutam aleha

She did not give up the whoring she had begun with the Egyptians; for they had lain with her in her youth, and they had handled her virgin nipples and had poured out their lust upon her.

lakhen netattiha beyad-me'ahaveha beyad bene ashur asher agevah alehem

Therefore I delivered her into the hands of her lovers, into the hands of the Assyrians after whom she lusted.

hemmah gillu ervatah baneha uvenoteha laqakhu ve'otah bakherev haragu vattehi-shem lannashim ushefutim asu vah

They exposed her nakedness; they seized her sons and daughters, and she herself was put to the sword. And because of the punishment inflicted upon her, she became a byword among women.

vattere akhotah oholivah vattashkhet agvatah mimmennah ve'et-taznuteha mizzenune akhotah

Her sister Oholibah saw this; yet her lusting was more depraved than her sister’s, and her whoring more debased.

el-bene ashur agavah pakhot useganim qerovim levushe mikhlol parashim rokheve susim bakhure khemed kullam

She lusted after the Assyrians, governors and prefects, warriors gorgeously clad, horsemen mounted on steeds—all of them handsome young fellows.

va'ere ki nitma'ah derekh ekhad lishtehen

And I saw how she had defiled herself. Both of them followed the same course,

vattosef el-taznuteha vattere anshe mekhuqqeh al-haqqir tsalme (khshdyym) [khasdim] khaquqim bashashar

but she carried her whoring further. For she saw men sculptured upon the walls, figures of Chaldeans drawn in vermilion,

khagore ezor bemotnehem serukhe tevulim berashehem mareh shalishim kullam demut bene-vavel kasdim erets moladtam

girded with belts round their waists, and with flowing turbans on their heads, all of them looking like officers—a picture of Babylonians whose native land was Chaldea.

(vtgv) [vattagevah] alehem lemareh eneha vattishlakh malakhim alehem kasdimah

At the very sight of them she lusted after them, and she sent messengers for them to Chaldea.

vayyavo'u eleha vene-vavel lemishkav dodim vayetamme'u otah betaznutam vattitma-vam vatteqa nafshah mehem

So the Babylonians came to her for lovemaking and defiled her with their whoring; and she defiled herself with them until she turned from them in disgust.

vattegal taznuteha vattegal et-ervatah vatteqa nafshi me'aleha ka'asher naqe'ah nafshi me'al akhotah

She flaunted her whoring and exposed her nakedness, and I turned from her in disgust, as I had turned disgusted from her sister.

vattarbeh et-taznuteha lizkor et-yeme ne'ureha asher zanetah be'erets mitsrayim

But she whored still more, remembering how in her youth she had played the whore in the land of Egypt;

vattagevah al pilagshehem asher besar-khamorim besaram vezirmat susim zirmatam

she lusted for concubinage with them, whose members were like those of donkeys and whose organs were like those of stallions.

vattifqedi et zimmat ne'urayikh basot mimmitsrayim daddayikh lema'an shede ne'urayikh

Thus you reverted to the wantonness of your youth, remembering your youthful breasts, when the men of Egypt handled your nipples.

lakhen oholivah koh-amar adonay Elohim hinni me'ir et-me'ahavayikh alayikh et asher-naqe'ah nafshekh mehem vahavetim alayikh missaviv

Assuredly, Oholibah, thus said the Sovereign GOD: I am going to rouse against you the lovers from whom you turned in disgust, and I will bring them upon you from all around—

bene vavel vekhol-kasdim peqod veshoa veqoa kol-bene ashur otam bakhure khemed pakhot useganim kullam shalishim uqeru'im rokheve susim kullam

the Babylonians and all the Chaldeans, [the people of] Pekod, Shoa, and Koa, and all the Assyrians with them, all of them handsome young fellows, governors and prefects, officers and warriors, all of them riding on horseback.

uva'u alayikh hotsen rekhev vegalgal uviqhal ammim tsinnah umagen veqova yasimu alayikh saviv venatatti lifnehem mishpat ushefatukh bemishpetehem

They shall attack you with fleets of wheeled chariots and a host of troops; they shall set themselves against you on all sides with bucklers, shields, and helmets. And I will entrust your punishment to them, and they shall inflict their punishments on you.

venatatti qinati bakh ve'asu otakh bekhemah appekh ve'oznayikh yasiru ve'akharitekh bakherev tippol hemmah banayikh uvenotayikh yiqqakhu ve'akharitekh te'akhel ba'esh

I will direct My passion against you, and they shall deal with you in fury: They shall cut off your nose and ears; the last of you shall fall by the sword. They shall take away your sons and daughters, and your remnant shall be devoured by fire.

vehifshitukh et-begadayikh velaqekhu kele tifartekh

They shall strip you of your clothing and take away your dazzling jewels.

vehishbatti zimmatekh mimmekh ve'et-zenutekh me'erets mitsrayim velo-tisi enayikh alehem umitsrayim lo tizkeri-od

I will put an end to your wantonness and to your whoring in the land of Egypt, and you shall not long for them or remember Egypt anymore.

ki khoh amar adonay Elohim hinni notenakh beyad asher sanet beyad asher-naqe'ah nafshekh mehem

For thus said the Sovereign GOD: I am going to deliver you into the hands of those you hate, into the hands of those from whom you turned in disgust.

ve'asu otakh besinah velaqekhu kol-yegi'ekh va'azavukh erom ve'eryah veniglah ervat zenunayikh vezimmatekh vetaznutayikh

They shall treat you with hate, and they shall take away all you have toiled for, and leave you naked and bare; your naked licentiousness, wantonness, and whoredom will be exposed.

asoh elleh lakh biznotekh akhare goyim al asher-nitmet begillulehem

These things shall be done to you for your whoring with the nations, for defiling yourself with their fetishes.

bederekh akhotekh halakht venatatti khosah beyadekh

You walked in your sister’s path; therefore I will put her cup into your hand.

koh amar adonay Elohim kos akhotekh tishti ha'amuqqah veharekhavah tihyeh litskhoq ulela'ag mirbah lehakhil

Thus said the Sovereign GOD: You shall drink of your sister’s cup, So deep and wide; It shall cause derision and scorn, It holds so much.

shikkaron veyagon timmale'i kos shammah ushemamah kos akhotekh shomeron

You shall be filled with drunkenness and woe. The cup of desolation and horror, The cup of your sister Samaria—

veshatit otah umatsit ve'et-kharaseha tegaremi veshadayikh tenatteqi ki ani dibbarti ne'um adonay Elohim

You shall drink it and drain it, And gnaw its shards; And you shall tear your breasts. For I have spoken—declares the Sovereign GOD.

lakhen koh amar adonay Elohim ya'an shakhakhat oti vattashlikhi oti akhare gavvekh vegam-at se'i zimmatekh ve'et-taznutayikh

Assuredly, thus said the Sovereign GOD: Because you have forgotten Me and cast Me behind your back, you in turn must suffer for your wanton whoring.

vayyomer Adonai elay ben-adam hatishpot et-oholah ve'et-oholivah vehagged lahen et to'avotehen

Then GOD said to me: O mortal, arraign Oholah and Oholibah, and charge them with their abominations.

ki ni'efu vedam bidehen ve'et-gillulehen ni'efu vegam et-benehen asher yaledu-li he'eviru lahem le'okhlah

For they have committed adultery, and blood is on their hands; truly they have committed adultery with their fetishes, and have even offered to them as food the children they bore to Me.

od zot asu li timme'u et-miqdashi bayyom hahu ve'et-shabbetotay khillelu

At the same time they also did this to Me: they defiled My Sanctuary and profaned My sabbaths.

uveshakhatam et-benehem legillulehem vayyavo'u el-miqdashi bayyom hahu lekhallelo vehinneh-khoh asu betokh beti

On the very day that they slaughtered their children to their fetishes, they entered My Sanctuary to desecrate it. That is what they did in My House.

ve'af ki tishlakhnah la'anashim ba'im mimmerkhaq asher malakh shaluakh alehem vehinneh-va'u la'asher rakhatst kakhalt enayikh ve'adit edi

Moreover, they sent for men to come from afar, [men] to whom a messenger was sent; and they came. For them, [Oholibah,] you bathed, painted your eyes, and donned your finery;

veyashavt al-mittah khevuddah veshulkhan arukh lefaneha uqetorti veshamni samt aleha

and you sat on a grand couch with a set table in front of it—and it was My incense and My oil you laid upon it.

veqol hamon shalev vah ve'el-anashim merov adam muva'im (svvym) [sova'im] mimmidbar vayyittenu tsemidim el-yedehen va'ateret tiferet al-rashehen

And the noise of a carefree multitude was there, of numerous men brought drunk from the desert; and they put bracelets on their arms and splendid crowns upon their heads.

va'omar labbalah ni'ufim (t) [attah] (yznh) [yiznu] taznuteha vahi

Then I said, “To destruction with adultery! Look, they are still going on with those same fornications of hers.”

vayyavo eleha kevo el-isha zonah ken ba'u el-oholah ve'el-oholivah ishot hazzimmah

And they would go to her as one goes to a prostitute; that is how they went to Oholah and Oholibah, wanton women.

va'anashim tsaddiqim hemmah yishpetu otehem mishpat no'afot umishpat shofekhot dam ki no'afot hennah vedam bidehen

But righteous men shall punish them with the punishments for adultery and for bloodshed, for they are adulteresses and have blood on their hands.

ki koh amar adonay Elohim ha'aleh alehem qahal venaton ethen leza'avah velavaz

For thus said the Sovereign GOD: Summon an assembly against them, and make them an object of horror and plunder.

veragemu alehen even qahal uvare otehen bekharvotam benehem uvenotehem yaharogu uvattehen ba'esh yisrofu

Let the assembly pelt them with stones and cut them down with their swords; let them kill their sons and daughters, and burn down their homes.

vehishbatti zimmah min-ha'arets venivvasseru kol-hannashim velo ta'asenah kezimmatkhenah

I will put an end to wantonness in the land; and all the women shall take warning not to imitate your wantonness.

venatenu zimmatkhenah alekhen vakhata'e gillulekhen tisseynah vidatem ki ani adonay Elohim

They shall punish you for your wantonness, and you shall suffer the penalty for your sinful idolatry. And you shall know that I am the Sovereign GOD.
