Ezra 8

ve'elleh rashe avotehem vehityakhsam ha'olim immi bemalkhut artakhshast hammelekh mibbavel

These are the heads of the clans and the register of the genealogy of those who came up with me from Babylon in the reign of King Artaxerxes:

mibbene finekhas gereshom mibbene itamar daniyyel mibbene david khattush

Of the sons of Phinehas, Gershom; of the sons of Ithamar, Daniel; of the sons of David, Hattush.

mibbene shekhanyah mibbene farosh zekharyah ve'immo hityakhes lizkharim me'ah vakhamishim

Of the sons of Shecaniah: of the sons of Parosh, Zechariah; through him the genealogy of 150 males was registered.

mibbene pakhat mo'av elyeho'enay ben-zerakhyah ve'immo matayim hazzekharim

Eliehoenai son of Zerahiah, of the sons of Pahath-moab, and with him 200 males.

mibbene shekhanyah ben-yakhazi'el ve'immo shelosh me'ot hazzekharim

Of the sons of Shecaniah son of Jahaziel; and with him 300 males.

umibbene adin eved ben-yonatan ve'immo khamishim hazzekharim

And of the sons of Adin, Ebed son of Jonathan; and with him 50 males.

umibbene elam yeshayah ben-atalyah ve'immo shivim hazzekharim

And of the sons of Elam, Jeshaiah son of Athaliah; and with him 70 males.

umibbene shefatyah zevadyah ben-mikha'el ve'immo shemonim hazzekharim

And of the sons of Shephatiah, Zebadiah son of Michael; and with him 80 males.

mibbene yo'av ovadyah ben-yekhi'el ve'immo matayim ushemonah asar hazzekharim

Of the sons of Joab, Obadiah son of Jehiel; and with him 218 males.

umibbene shelomit ben-yosifyah ve'immo me'ah veshishim hazzekharim

And of the sons of Shelomith, the son of Josiphiah; and with him 160 males.

umibbene vevay zekharyah ben-bevay ve'immo esrim ushemonah hazzekharim

And of the sons of Bebai, Zechariah son of Bebai; and with him 28 males.

umibbene azgad yokhanan ben-haqqatan ve'immo me'ah va'asarah hazzekharim

And of the sons of Azgad, Johanan son of Hakkatan; and with him 110 males.

umibbene adoniqam akharonim ve'elleh shemotam elifelet ye'i'el ushemayah ve'immahem shishim hazzekharim

And of the sons of Adonikam, who were the last; and these are their names: Eliphelet, Jeiel, and Shemaiah; and with them 60 males.

umibbene vigvay utay (vzvvd) [vezakkur] ve'immo shivim hazzekharim

And of the sons of Bigvai, Uthai and Zaccur; and with them 70 males.

va'eqbetsem el-hannahar habba el-ahava vannakhaneh sham yamim sheloshah va'avinah va'am uvakkohanim umibbene levi lo-matsati sham

These I assembled by the river that enters Ahava, and we encamped there for three days. I reviewed the people and the priests, but I did not find any Levites there.

va'eshlekhah le'eli'ezer la'ari'el lishmayah ule'elnatan uleyariv ule'elnatan ulenatan velizkharyah velimshullam rashim uleyoyariv ule'elnatan mevinim

I sent for Eliezer, Ariel, Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zechariah, and Meshullam, the leading men, and also for Joiarib and Elnathan, the instructors,

(vvtsh) [va'atsavveh] otam al-iddo harosh bekhasifya hammaqom va'asimah befihem devarim ledabber el-iddo akhiv (hntvnym) [hannetinim] bekhasifya hammaqom lehavi-lanu mesharetim levet elohenu

and I gave them an order for Iddo, the leader at the place [called] Casiphia. I gave them a message to convey to Iddo [and] his brother, temple-servants at the place [called] Casiphia, that they should bring us attendants for the House of our God.

vayyaviu lanu keyad-elohenu hattovah alenu ish sekhel mibbene makhli ben-levi ben-yisra'el veshereveyah uvanayw ve'ekhayw shemonah asar

Thanks to the benevolent care of our God for us, they brought us a capable man of the family of Mahli son of Levi son of Israel, and Sherebiah and his sons and brothers, 18 in all,

ve'et-khashavyah ve'itto yeshayah mibbene merari ekhayw uvenehem esrim

and Hashabiah, and with him Jeshaiah of the family of Merari, his brothers and their sons, 20 in all;

umin-hannetinim shennatan david vehassarim la'avodat haleviyyim netinim matayim ve'esrim kullam niqqevu veshemot

and of the temple servants whom David and the officers had appointed for the service of the Levites—220 temple servants, all of them listed by name.

va'eqra sham tsom al-hannahar ahava lehitannot lifne elohenu levaqqesh mimmennu derekh yesharah lanu uletappenu ulekhol-rekhushenu

I proclaimed a fast there by the Ahava River to afflict ourselves before our God and to plead for a smooth journey for us and for our children and for all our possessions;

ki vosheti lishol min-hammelekh khayil ufarashim le'ozrenu me'oyev baddarekh ki-amarnu lammelekh lemor yad-elohenu al-kol-mevaqshayw letovah ve'uzzo ve'appo al kol-ozevayw

for I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and cavalry to protect us against any enemy on the way, since we had told the king, “Our God shows benevolent care for all seekers, but fierce anger against all deserters.”

vannatsumah vannevaqshah me'elohenu al-zot vayye'ater lanu

So we fasted and besought our God for this, and our plea was answered.

va'avdilah missare hakkohanim shenem asar leshereveyah khashavyah ve'immahem me'akhehem asarah

Then I selected twelve of the chiefs of the priests, namely Sherebiah and Hashabiah with ten of their brothers,

(vshqvlh) [vo'eshqolah] lahem et-hakkesef ve'et-hazzahav ve'et-hakkelim terumat bet-elohenu haherimu hammelekh veyo'atsayw vesarayw vekhol-yisra'el hannimtsa'im

and I weighed out to them the silver, the gold, and the vessels, the contribution to the House of our God that the king, his counselors and officers, and all Israel who were present had made.

va'eshqelah al-yadam kesef kikkarim shesh-me'ot vakhamishim ukhele-khesef me'ah lekhikkarim zahav me'ah khikkar

I entrusted to their safekeeping the weight of six hundred and fifty talents of silver, one hundred silver vessels of one talent each, one hundred talents of gold;

ukhefore zahav esrim la'adarkhonim alef ukhele nekhoshet mutshav tovah shenayim khamudot kazzahav

also, twenty gold bowls worth one thousand darics and two vessels of good, shining bronze, as precious as gold.

va'omerah alehem attem qodesh la-Adonai vehakkelim qodesh vehakkesef vehazzahav nedavah la-Adonai elohe avotekhem

I said to them, “You are consecrated to GOD, and the vessels are consecrated, and the silver and gold are a freewill offering to the ETERNAL God of your ancestors.

shiqdu veshimru ad-tishqelu lifne sare hakkohanim vehaleviyyim vesare-ha'avot leyisra'el birushalai͏m hallishkhot bet Adonai

Guard them diligently until such time as you weigh them out in the presence of the officers of the priests and the Levites and the officers of the clans of Israel in Jerusalem in the chambers of the House of GOD.”

veqibbelu hakkohanim vehaleviyyim mishqal hakkesef vehazzahav vehakkelim lehavi lirushalai͏m levet elohenu

So the priests and the Levites received the cargo of silver and gold and vessels by weight, to bring them to Jerusalem to the House of our God.

vannisse'ah minnehar ahava bishnem asar lakhodesh harishon lalekhet yerushalai͏m veyad-elohenu hayetah alenu vayyatsilenu mikkaf oyev ve'orev al-haddarekh

We set out for Jerusalem from the Ahava River on the twelfth of the first month. We enjoyed the care of our God, who saved us from enemy ambush on the journey.

vannavo yerushalai͏m vanneshev sham yamim sheloshah

We arrived in Jerusalem and stayed there three days.

uvayyom harevi'i nishqal hakkesef vehazzahav vehakkelim bevet elohenu al yad-meremot ben-uriyyah hakkohen ve'immo elazar ben-pinekhas ve'immahem yozavad ben-yeshua veno'adyah ven-binnuy haleviyyim

On the fourth day the silver, gold, and vessels were weighed out in the House of our God into the keeping of Meremoth son of Uriah the priest, with whom was Eleazar son of Phinehas. Jozabad son of Jeshua, and Noadiah son of Binnui, the Levites, were with them.

bemispar bemishqal lakkol vayyikkatev kol-hammishqal ba'et hahi

Everything accorded as to number and weight, the entire cargo being recorded at that time.

habba'im mehashevi vene-haggolah hiqrivu olot lelohe yisra'el parim shenem-asar al-kol-yisra'el elim tishim veshisha kevasim shivim veshivah tsefire khattat shenem asar hakkol olah la-Adonai

The returning exiles who arrived from captivity made burnt offerings to the God of Israel: twelve bulls for all Israel, ninety-six rams, seventy-seven lambs and twelve he-goats as a purification offering, all this a burnt offering to GOD.

vayyittenu et-date hammelekh la'akhashdarpene hammelekh ufakhavot ever hannahar venisse'u et-ha'am ve'et-bet ha'elohim

They handed the royal orders to the king’s satraps and the governors of the province of Beyond the River who gave support to the people and the House of God.
