bereshit bara elohim et hashamayim ve'et ha'arets

When God began to create heaven and earth—

veha'arets hayetah tohu vavohu vekhoshekh al-pene tehom veruakh elohim merakhefet al-pene hammayim

the earth being unformed and void, with darkness over the surface of the deep and a wind from God sweeping over the water—

vayyomer elohim yehi or vayehi-or

God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.

vayyar elohim et-ha'or ki-tov vayyavdel elohim ben ha'or uven hakhoshekh

God saw that the light was good, and God separated the light from the darkness.

vayyiqra elohim la'or yom velakhoshekh qara layelah vayehi-erev vayehi-voqer yom ekhad

God called the light Day—and called the darkness Night. And there was evening and there was morning, a first day.

vayyomer elohim yehi raqia betokh hammayim vihi mavdil ben mayim lamayim

God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the water, that it may separate water from water.”

vayya'as elohim et-haraqia vayyavdel ben hammayim asher mittakhat laraqia uven hammayim asher me'al laraqia vayehi-khen

God made the expanse, and it separated the water that was below the expanse from the water that was above the expanse. And it was so.

vayyiqra elohim laraqia shamayim vayehi-erev vayehi-voqer yom sheni

God called the expanse Sky. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day.

vayyomer elohim yiqqavu hammayim mittakhat hashamayim el-maqom ekhad vetera'eh hayyabbashah vayehi-khen

God said, “Let the water below the sky be gathered into one area, that the dry land may appear.” And it was so.

vayyiqra elohim layyabbashah erets ulemiqveh hammayim qara yammim vayyar elohim ki-tov

God called the dry land Earth—and called the gathering of waters Seas. And God saw that this was good.

vayyomer elohim tadshe ha'arets deshe esev mazria zera ets peri oseh peri lemino asher zaro-vo al-ha'arets vayehi-khen

And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation: seed-bearing plants, fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it.” And it was so.

vattotse ha'arets deshe esev mazria zera leminehu ve'ets oseh-pperi asher zaro-vo leminehu vayyar elohim ki-tov

The earth brought forth vegetation: seed-bearing plants of every kind, and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it. And God saw that this was good.

vayehi-erev vayehi-voqer yom shelishi

And there was evening and there was morning, a third day.

vayyomer elohim yehi me'orot birqia hashamayim lehavdil ben hayyom uven hallayelah vehayu le'otot ulemo'adim uleyamim veshanim

God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate day from night; they shall serve as signs for the set times—the days and the years;

vehayu limorot birqia hashamayim leha'ir al-ha'arets vayehi-khen

and they shall serve as lights in the expanse of the sky to shine upon the earth.” And it was so.

vayya'as elohim et-shene hamme'orot haggedolim et-hamma'or haggadol lememshelet hayyom ve'et-hamma'or haqqaton lememshelet hallaylah ve'et hakkokhavim

God made the two great lights, the greater light to dominate the day and the lesser light to dominate the night, and the stars.

vayyitten otam elohim birqia hashamayim leha'ir al-ha'arets

And God set them in the expanse of the sky to shine upon the earth,

velimshol bayyom uvallaylah ulehavdil ben ha'or uven hakhoshekh vayyar elohim ki-tov

to dominate the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that this was good.

vayehi-erev vayehi-voqer yom revi'i

And there was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.

vayyomer elohim yishretsu hammayim sherets nefesh khayyah ve'of ye'ofef al-ha'arets al-pene reqia hashamayim

God said, “Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and birds that fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky.”

vayyivra elohim et-hattanninim haggedolim ve'et kol-nefesh hakhayyah haromeset asher sharetsu hammayim leminehem ve'et kol-of kanaf leminehu vayyar elohim ki-tov

God created the great sea monsters, and all the living creatures of every kind that creep, which the waters brought forth in swarms, and all the winged birds of every kind. And God saw that this was good.

vayevarekh otam elohim lemor peru urevu umilu et-hammayim bayyammim veha'of yirev ba'arets

God blessed them, saying, “Be fertile and increase, fill the waters in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.”

vayehi-erev vayehi-voqer yom khamishi

And there was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.

vayyomer elohim totse ha'arets nefesh khayyah leminah behemah varemes vekhayto-erets leminah vayehi-khen

God said, “Let the earth bring forth every kind of living creature: cattle, creeping things, and wild beasts of every kind.” And it was so.

vayya'as elohim et-khayyat ha'arets leminah ve'et-habbehemah leminah ve'et kol-remes ha'adamah leminehu vayyar elohim ki-tov

God made wild beasts of every kind and cattle of every kind, and all kinds of creeping things of the earth. And God saw that this was good.

vayyomer elohim na'aseh adam betsalmenu kidmutenu veyirdu vidgat hayyam uve'of hashamayim uvabbehemah uvekhol-ha'arets uvekhol-haremes haromes al-ha'arets

And God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, after our likeness. They shall rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the cattle, the whole earth, and all the creeping things that creep on earth.”

vayyivra elohim et-ha'adam betsalmo betselem elohim bara oto zakhar uneqevah bara otam

And God created humankind in the divine image, creating it in the image of God— creating them male and female.

vayevarekh otam elohim vayyomer lahem elohim peru urevu umilu et-ha'arets vekhivshuha uredu bidgat hayyam uve'of hashamayim uvekhol-khayyah haromeset al-ha'arets

God blessed them and God said to them, “Be fertile and increase, fill the earth and master it; and rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and all the living things that creep on earth.”

vayyomer elohim hinneh natatti lakhem et-kol-esev zorea zera asher al-pene khol-ha'arets ve'et-kol-ha'ets asher-bo feri-ets zorea zara lakhem yihyeh le'okhlah

God said, “See, I give you every seed-bearing plant that is upon all the earth, and every tree that has seed-bearing fruit; they shall be yours for food.

ulekhol-khayyat ha'arets ulekhol-of hashamayim ulekhol romes al-ha'arets asher-bo nefesh khayyah et-kol-yereq esev le'okhlah vayehi-khen

And to all the animals on land, to all the birds of the sky, and to everything that creeps on earth, in which there is the breath of life, [I give] all the green plants for food.” And it was so.

vayyar elohim et-kol-asher asah vehinneh-tov me'od vayehi-erev vayehi-voqer yom hashishi

And God saw all that had been made, and found it very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
