וַ֭יַּעַן בִּלְדַּ֥ד הַשֻּׁחִ֗י וַיֹּאמַֽר׃
vayya'an bildad hashukhi vayyomar
Bildad the Shuhite said in reply:
הַמְשֵׁ֣ל וָפַ֣חַד עִמּ֑וֹ עֹשֶׂ֥ה שָׁ֝ל֗וֹם בִּמְרוֹמָֽיו׃
hameshel vafakhad immo oseh shalom bimromayw
Dominion and dread are God’s, Who imposes peace on high.
הֲיֵ֣שׁ מִ֭סְפָּר לִגְדוּדָ֑יו וְעַל־מִ֝֗י לֹא־יָק֥וּם אוֹרֵֽהוּ׃
hayesh mispar ligdudayw ve'al-mi lo-yaqum orehu
Can the celestial troops be numbered? On whom does God’s light not shine?
וּמַה־יִּצְדַּ֣ק אֱנ֣וֹשׁ עִם־אֵ֑ל וּמַה־יִּ֝זְכֶּ֗ה יְל֣וּד אִשָּֽׁה׃
umah-yyitsdaq enosh im-el umah-yyizkeh yelud isha
How can a mortal be in the right before God? How can one born of woman be cleared of guilt?
הֵ֣ן עַד־יָ֭רֵחַ וְלֹ֣א יַאֲהִ֑יל וְ֝כוֹכָבִ֗ים לֹא־זַכּ֥וּ בְעֵינָֽיו׃
hen ad-yareakh velo ya'ahil vekhokhavim lo-zakku ve'enayw
Even the moon is not bright, And the stars are not pure in God’s sight.
אַ֭ף כִּֽי־אֱנ֣וֹשׁ רִמָּ֑ה וּבֶן־אָ֝דָ֗ם תּוֹלֵעָֽה׃ {פ}
af ki-enosh rimmah uven-adam tole'ah
How much less a mortal, a worm, One born of humans, a maggot.
