Joshua 21

vayyiggeshu rashe avot haleviyyim el-elazar hakkohen ve'el-yehoshua bin-nun ve'el-rashe avot hammattot livne yisra'el

The family heads of the Levites approached the priest Eleazar, Joshua son of Nun, and the family heads of the Israelite tribes,

vayedabberu alehem beshiloh be'erets kena'an lemor Adonai tsivvah veyad-mosheh latet-lanu arim lashavet umigreshehen livhemtenu

and spoke to them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, as follows: “GOD commanded through Moses that we be given towns to live in, along with their pastures for our livestock.”

vayyittenu vene-yisra'el lalviyyim minnakhalatam el-pi Adonai et-he'arim ha'elleh ve'et-migreshehen

So the Israelites, in accordance with GOD’s command, assigned to the Levites, out of their own portions, the following towns with their pastures:

vayyetse haggoral lemishpekhot haqqehati vayehi livne aharon hakkohen min-haleviyyim mimmatteh yehudah umimmatteh hashimoni umimmatteh vinyamin baggoral arim shelosh esreh

The [first] lot among the Levites fell to the Kohathite clans. To the descendants of the priest Aaron, there fell by lot 13 towns from the tribe of Judah, the tribe of Simeon, and the tribe of Benjamin;

velivne qehat hannotarim mimmishpekhot matteh-efrayim umimmatteh-dan umekhatsi matteh menasheh baggoral arim aser

and to the remaining Kohathites [there fell] by lot 10 towns from the clans of the tribe of Ephraim, the tribe of Dan, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.

velivne gereshon mimmishpekhot matteh-yissashkhar umimmatteh-asher umimmatteh naftali umekhatsi matteh menasheh vabbashan baggoral arim shelosh esreh

To the Gershonites [there fell] by lot 13 towns from the clans of the tribe of Issachar, the tribe of Asher, the tribe of Naphtali, and the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan.

livne merari lemishpekhotam mimmatteh re'uven umimmatteh-gad umimmatteh zevulun arim shetem esreh

[And] to the Merarites, by their clans—12 towns from the tribe of Reuben, the tribe of Gad, and the tribe of Zebulun.

vayyittenu vene-yisra'el lalviyyim et-he'arim ha'elleh ve'et-migreshehen ka'asher tsivvah Adonai beyad-mosheh baggoral

The Israelites assigned those towns with their pastures by lot to the Levites—as GOD had commanded through Moses.

vayyittenu mimmatteh bene yehudah umimmatteh bene shimon et he'arim ha'elleh asher-yiqra ethen beshem

From the tribe of the Judahites and the tribe of the Simeonites were assigned the following towns, which will be listed by name;

vayehi livne aharon mimmishpekhot haqqehati mibbene levi ki lahem hayah haggoral riyshonah

they went to the descendants of Aaron among the Kohathite clans of the Levites, for the first lot had fallen to them.

vayyittenu lahem et-qiryat arba avi ha'anoq hi khevron behar yehudah ve'et-migrasheha sevivoteha

To them were assigned in the hill country of Judah Kiriath-arba—that is, Hebron—together with the pastures around it. [Arba was] the father of the Anokites.

ve'et-sedeh ha'ir ve'et-khatsereha natenu lekhalev ben-yefunneh ba'akhuzzato

They gave the fields and the villages of the town to Caleb son of Jephunneh as his holding.

velivne aharon hakkohen natenu et-ir miqlat harotseakh et-khevron ve'et-migrasheha ve'et-livnah ve'et-migrasheha

But to the descendants of Aaron the priest they assigned Hebron—the city of refuge for manslayers—together with its pastures, Libnah with its pastures,

ve'et-yattir ve'et-migrasheha ve'et-eshtemoa ve'et-migrasheha

Jattir with its pastures, Eshtemoa with its pastures,

ve'et-kholon ve'et-migrasheha ve'et-devir ve'et-migrasheha

Holon with its pastures, Debir with its pastures,

ve'et-ayin ve'et-migrasheha ve'et-yuttah ve'et-migrasheha et-bet shemesh ve'et-migrasheha arim tesha me'et shene hashevatim ha'elleh

Ain with its pastures, Juttah with its pastures, and Beth-shemesh with its pastures—9 towns from those two tribes.

umimmatteh vinyamin et-givon ve'et-migrasheha et-geva ve'et-migrasheha

And from the tribe of Benjamin: Gibeon with its pastures, Geba with its pastures,

et-anatot ve'et-migrasheha ve'et-almon ve'et-migrasheha arim arba

Anathoth with its pastures, and Almon with its pastures—4 towns.

kol-are vene-aharon hakkohanim shelosh-esreh arim umigreshehen

All the towns of the descendants of the priest Aaron, 13 towns with their pastures.

ulemishpekhot bene-qehat haleviyyim hannotarim mibbene qehat vayehi are goralam mimmatteh efrayim

As for the other clans of the Kohathites, the remaining Levites descended from Kohath, the towns in their lot were: From the tribe of Ephraim

vayyittenu lahem et-ir miqlat harotseakh et-shekhem ve'et-migrasheha behar efrayim ve'et-gezer ve'et-migrasheha

they were given, in the hill country of Ephraim, Shechem—the city of refuge for manslayers—with its pastures, Gezer with its pastures,

ve'et-qivtsayim ve'et-migrasheha ve'et-bet khoron ve'et-migrasheha arim arba

Kibzaim with its pastures, and Beth-horon with its pastures—4 towns.

umimmatteh-dan et-elteqe ve'et-migrasheha et-gibbeton ve'et-migrasheha

From the tribe of Dan, Elteke with its pastures, Gibbethon with its pastures,

et-ayyalon ve'et-migrasheha et-gat-rimmon ve'et-migrasheha arim arba

Aijalon with its pastures, and Gath-rimmon with its pastures—4 towns.

umimmakhatsit matteh menasheh et-tanakh ve'et-migrasheha ve'et-gat rimmon ve'et-migrasheha arim shetayim

And from the half-tribe of Manasseh, Taanach with its pastures, and Gath-rimmon with its pastures—2 towns.

kol-arim eser umigreshehen lemishpekhot bene-qehat hannotarim

All the towns for the remaining clans of the Kohathites came to 10, with their pastures.

velivne gereshon mimmishpekhot haleviyyim mekhatsi matteh menasheh et-ir miqlat harotseakh et-[golan] (glvn) babbashan ve'et-migrasheha ve'et-be'eshterah ve'et-migrasheha arim shetayim

To the Gershonites of the Levitical clans: From the half-tribe of Manasseh, Golan in Bashan—the city of refuge for manslayers—with its pastures, and Beeshterah with its pastures—2 towns.

umimmatteh yissashkhar et-qishyon ve'et-migrasheha et-daverat ve'et-migrasheha

From the tribe of Issachar: Kishion with its pastures, Dobrath with its pastures,

et-yarmut ve'et-migrasheha et-en gannim ve'et-migrasheha arim arba

Jarmuth with its pastures, and En-gannim with its pastures—4 towns.

umimmatteh asher et-mishal ve'et-migrasheha et-avdon ve'et-migrasheha

From the tribe of Asher: Mishal with its pastures, Abdon with its pastures,

et-khelqat ve'et-migrasheha ve'et-rekhov ve'et-migrasheha arim arba

Helkath with its pastures, and Rehob with its pastures—4 towns.

umimmatteh naftali et-ir miqlat harotseakh et-qedesh baggalil ve'et-migrasheha ve'et-khammot dor ve'et-migrasheha ve'et-qartan ve'et-migrasheha arim shalosh

From the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilee—the city of refuge for manslayers—with its pastures, Hammoth-dor with its pastures, and Kartan with its pastures—3 towns.

kol-are haggereshunni lemishpekhotam shelosh-esreh ir umigreshehen

All the towns of the Gershonites, by their clans, came to 13 towns, with their pastures.

ulemishpekhot bene-merari haleviyyim hannotarim me'et matteh zevulun et-yoqne'am ve'et-migrasheha et-qartah ve'et-migrasheha

To the remaining Levites, the clans of the Merarites: From the tribe of Zebulun, Jokneam with its pastures, Kartah with its pastures,

et-dimnah ve'et-migrasheha et-nahalal ve'et-migrasheha arim arba

Dimnah with its pastures, and Nahalal with its pastures—4 towns.

umimmatteh-gad et-ir miqlat harotseakh et-ramot baggilad ve'et-migrasheha ve'et-makhanayim ve'et-migrasheha

From the tribe of Gad, Ramoth in Gilead—the city of refuge for manslayers—with its pastures, Mahanaim with its pastures,

et-kheshbon ve'et-migrasheha et-yazer ve'et-migrasheha kol-arim arba

Heshbon with its pastures, and Jazer with its pastures—4 towns in all.

kol-he'arim livne merari lemishpekhotam hannotarim mimmishpekhot haleviyyim vayehi goralam arim shetem esreh

All the towns that went by lot to the Merarites, by their clans—the rest of the Levitical clans—came to 12 towns.

kol are haleviyyim betokh akhuzzat bene-yisra'el arim arba'im ushemoneh umigreshehen

All the towns of the Levites within the holdings of the Israelites came to 48 towns, with their pastures.

tihyenah he'arim ha'elleh ir ir umigrasheha sevivoteha ken lekhol-he'arim ha'elleh

Thus those towns were assigned, every town with its surrounding pasture; and so it was with all those towns.

vayyitten Adonai leyisra'el et-kol-ha'arets asher nishba latet la'avotam vayyirashuha vayyeshevu vah

Israel was given the whole country that GOD had sworn to their fathers to assign them; they took possession of it and settled in it.

vayyanakh Adonai lahem missaviv kekhol asher-nishba la'avotam velo-amad ish bifnehem mikkol-oyevehem et kol-oyevehem natan Adonai beyadam

GOD gave them rest on all sides, just as had been promised to their fathers on oath. Not one of all their enemies withstood them; GOD delivered all their enemies into their hands.

lo-nafal davar mikkol haddavar hattov asher-dibber Adonai el-bet yisra'el hakkol ba

Not one of the good things that GOD had promised to the House of Israel was lacking. Everything was fulfilled.
