Hosea 4

shimu devar-Adonai bene yisra'el ki riv la-Adonai im-yosheve ha'arets ki en-emet ve'en-khesed ve'en-da'at elohim ba'arets

Hear the word of GOD, O people of Israel! For GOD has a case Against the inhabitants of this land, Because there is no honesty and no goodness And no devotion to God in the land.

aloh vekhakhesh veratsoakh veganov vena'of paratsu vedamim bedamim naga'u

[False] swearing, dishonesty, and murder, And theft and adultery are rife; Crime follows upon crime!

al-ken te'eval ha'arets ve'umlal kol-yoshev bah bekhayyat hassadeh uve'of hashamayim vegam-dege hayyam ye'asefu

For that, the earth is withered: Everything that dwells on it languishes— Beasts of the field and birds of the sky— Even the fish of the sea perish.

akh ish al-yarev ve'al-yokhakh ish ve'ammekha kimrive khohen

“Let no one rebuke; let no one protest!” For this, your people has a grievance against [you], O priest!

vekhashalta hayyom vekhashal gam-navi immekha layelah vedamiti immekha

So you shall stumble by day, And by night a prophet shall stumble as well, And I will destroy your kindred.

nidmu ammi mibbeli hadda'at ki-attah hadda'at ma'asta (vmskh) [ve'emasekha] mikkahen li vattishkakh torat elohekha eshkakh banekha gam-ani

My people is destroyed for the lack of devotion! Because you have rejected devotion, I reject you as My priest; Because you have spurned the teaching of your God, I, in turn, will spurn your children.

kerubbam ken khate'u-li kevodam beqalon amir

The more they increased, the more they sinned against Me: I will change their dignity to dishonor.

khattat ammi yokhelu ve'el-avonam yisu nafsho

They feed on My people’s purgation offerings, And so they desire its iniquity.

vehayah kha'am kakkohen ufaqadti alayw derakhayw uma'alalayw ashiv lo

Therefore, the people shall fare like the priests: I will punish it for its conduct, I will requite it for its deeds.

ve'okhlu velo yisba'u hiznu velo yifrotsu ki-et-Adonai azevu lishmor

Truly, they shall eat, but not be sated; They shall swill, but not be satisfied, Because they have forsaken GOD To practice

zenut veyayin vetirosh yiqqakh-lev

lechery. Wine and new wine destroy The mind of

ammi be'etso yishal umaqlo yaggid lo ki ruakh zenunim hitah vayyiznu mittakhat elohehem

My people: It consults its stick, Its rod directs it! A lecherous impulse has made them go wrong, And they have strayed from submission to their God.

al-rashe heharim yezabbekhu ve'al-haggeva'ot yeqatteru takhat allon velivneh ve'elah ki tov tsillah al-ken tiznenah benotekhem vekhallotekhem tena'afnah

They sacrifice on the mountaintops And offer on the hills, Under oaks, poplars, and terebinths Whose shade is so pleasant. That is why their daughters fornicate And their daughters-in-law commit adultery!

lo-efqod al-benotekhem ki tiznenah ve'al-kallotekhem ki tena'afnah ki-hem im-hazzonot yefaredu ve'im-haqqedeshot yezabbekhu ve'am lo-yavin yillavet

I will not punish their daughters for fornicating Nor their daughters-in-law for committing adultery; For they themselves turn aside with whores And sacrifice with female consecrated workers, And a people that is without sense must stumble.

im-zoneh attah yisra'el al-yesham yehudah ve'al-tavo'u haggilgal ve'al-ta'alu bet aven ve'al-tishave'u khay-Adonai

If you are a lecher, Israel— Let not Judah incur guilt— Do not come to Gilgal, Do not make pilgrimages to Beth-aven, And do not swear by GOD!

ki kefarah sorerah sarar yisra'el attah yirem Adonai kekheves bammerkhav

Ah, Israel has balked Like a stubborn cow; Therefore, GOD will graze him On the range, like a sheep.

khavur atsabbim efrayim hannakh-lo

Ephraim is addicted to images— Let him be.

sar sovam hazneh hiznu ahavu hevu qalon maginneha

They drink to excess— Their liquor turns against them. They “love” beyond measure— Disgrace is the “gift”

tsarar ruakh otah bikhnafeha veyevoshu mizzivkhotam

That the wind is bringing; They shall garner shame from their sacrifices.
