Leviticus 16

vayedabber Adonai el-mosheh akhare mot shene bene aharon beqorvatam lifne-Adonai vayyamutu

GOD spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron who died when they drew too close to GOD’s presence.

vayyomer Adonai el-mosheh dabber el-aharon akhikha ve'al-yavo vekhol-et el-haqqodesh mibbet lapparokhet el-pene hakkapporet asher al-ha'aron velo yamut ki be'anan era'eh al-hakkapporet

GOD said to Moses: Tell your brother Aaron that he is not to come at will into the Shrine behind the curtain, in front of the cover that is upon the ark, lest he die; for I appear in the cloud over the cover.

bezot yavo aharon el-haqqodesh befar ben-baqar lekhattat ve'ayil le'olah

Thus only shall Aaron enter the Shrine: with a bull of the herd for a purgation offering and a ram for a burnt offering.—

ketonet-bad qodesh yilbash umikhnese-vad yihyu al-besaro uve'avnet bad yakhgor uvemitsnefet bad yitsnof bigde-qodesh hem verakhats bammayim et-besaro ulevesham

He shall be dressed in a sacral linen tunic, with linen breeches next to his flesh, and be girt with a linen sash, and he shall wear a linen turban. They are sacral vestments; he shall bathe in water and then put them on.—

ume'et adat bene yisra'el yiqqakh shene-se'ire izzim lekhattat ve'ayil ekhad le'olah

And from the Israelite community he shall take two he-goats for a purgation offering and a ram for a burnt offering.

vehiqriv aharon et-par hakhattat asher-lo vekhipper ba'ado uve'ad beto

Aaron is to offer his own bull of purgation offering, to make expiation for himself and for his household.

velaqakh et-shene hasse'irim vehe'emid otam lifne Adonai petakh ohel mo'ed

Aaron shall take the two he-goats and let them stand before GOD at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting;

venatan aharon al-shene hasse'irim goralot goral ekhad la-Adonai vegoral ekhad la'azazel

and he shall place lots upon the two goats, one marked for GOD and the other marked for Azazel.

vehiqriv aharon et-hassa'ir asher alah alayw haggoral la-Adonai ve'asahu khattat

Aaron shall bring forward the goat designated by lot for GOD, which he is to offer as a purgation offering;

vehassa'ir asher alah alayw haggoral la'azazel yo'omad-khay lifne Adonai lekhapper alayw leshallakh oto la'azazel hammidbarah

while the goat designated by lot for Azazel shall be left standing alive before GOD, to make expiation with it and to send it off to the wilderness for Azazel.

vehiqriv aharon et-par hakhattat asher-lo vekhipper ba'ado uve'ad beto veshakhat et-par hakhattat asher-lo

Aaron shall then offer his bull of purgation offering, to make expiation for himself and his household. He shall slaughter his bull of purgation offering,

velaqakh melo-hammakhtah gakhale-esh me'al hammizbeakh millifne Adonai umelo khofnayw qetoret sammim daqqah vehevi mibbet lapparokhet

and he shall take a panful of glowing coals scooped from the altar before GOD, and two handfuls of finely ground aromatic incense, and bring this behind the curtain.

venatan et-haqqetoret al-ha'esh lifne Adonai vekhissah anan haqqetoret et-hakkapporet asher al-ha'edut velo yamut

He shall put the incense on the fire before GOD, so that the cloud from the incense screens the cover that is over [the Ark of] the Pact, lest he die.

velaqakh middam happar vehizzah ve'etsba'o al-pene hakkapporet qedemah velifne hakkapporet yazzeh sheva-pe'amim min-haddam be'etsba'o

He shall take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger over the cover on the east side; and in front of the cover he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times.

veshakhat et-se'ir hakhattat asher la'am vehevi et-damo el-mibbet lapparokhet ve'asah et-damo ka'asher asah ledam happar vehizzah oto al-hakkapporet velifne hakkapporet

He shall then slaughter the people’s goat of purgation offering, bring its blood behind the curtain, and do with its blood as he has done with the blood of the bull: he shall sprinkle it over the cover and in front of the cover.

vekhipper al-haqqodesh mittumot bene yisra'el umippishehem lekhol-khattotam vekhen ya'aseh le'ohel mo'ed hashokhen ittam betokh tumotam

Thus he shall purge the Shrine of the impurity and transgression of the Israelites, whatever their sins; and he shall do the same for the Tent of Meeting, which abides with them in the midst of their impurity.

vekhol-adam lo-yihyeh be'ohel mo'ed bevo'o lekhapper baqqodesh ad-tseto vekhipper ba'ado uve'ad beto uve'ad kol-qehal yisra'el

When he goes in to make expiation in the Shrine, nobody else shall be in the Tent of Meeting until he comes out. When he has made expiation for himself and his household, and for the whole congregation of Israel,

veyatsa el-hammizbeakh asher lifne-Adonai vekhipper alayw velaqakh middam happar umiddam hassa'ir venatan al-qarnot hammizbeakh saviv

he shall go out to the altar that is before GOD and purge it: he shall take some of the blood of the bull and of the goat and apply it to each of the horns of the altar;

vehizzah alayw min-haddam be'etsba'o sheva pe'amim vetiharo veqiddesho mittumot bene yisra'el

and the rest of the blood he shall sprinkle on it with his finger seven times. Thus he shall purify it of the defilement of the Israelites and consecrate it.

vekhillah mikkapper et-haqqodesh ve'et-ohel mo'ed ve'et-hammizbeakh vehiqriv et-hassa'ir hekhay

When he has finished purging the Shrine, the Tent of Meeting, and the altar, the live goat shall be brought forward.

vesamakh aharon et-shete yadav al rosh hassa'ir hakhay vehitvaddah alayw et-kol-avonot bene yisra'el ve'et-kol-pishehem lekhol-khattotam venatan otam al-rosh hassa'ir veshillakh beyad-ish itti hammidbarah

Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat and confess over it all the iniquities and transgressions of the Israelites, whatever their sins, putting them on the head of the goat; and it shall be sent off to the wilderness through a designated agent.

venasa hassa'ir alayw et-kol-avonotam el-erets gezerah veshillakh et-hassa'ir bammidbar

Thus the goat shall carry on it all their iniquities to an inaccessible region; and the goat shall be set free in the wilderness.

uva aharon el-ohel mo'ed ufashat et-bigde habbad asher lavash bevo'o el-haqqodesh vehinnikham sham

And Aaron shall go into the Tent of Meeting, take off the linen vestments that he put on when he entered the Shrine, and leave them there.

verakhats et-besaro vammayim bemaqom qadosh velavash et-begadayw veyatsa ve'asah et-olato ve'et-olat ha'am vekhipper ba'ado uve'ad ha'am

He shall bathe in water in the holy precinct and put on his vestments; then he shall come out and offer his burnt offering and the burnt offering of the people, making expiation for himself and for the people.

ve'et khelev hakhattat yaqtir hammizbekhah

The fat of the purgation offering he shall turn into smoke on the altar.

vehameshalleakh et-hassa'ir la'azazel yekhabbes begadayw verakhats et-besaro bammayim ve'akhare-khen yavo el-hammakhaneh

The one who set the Azazel-goat free shall wash their clothes and bathe in water—and after that may reenter the camp.

ve'et par hakhattat ve'et se'ir hakhattat asher huva et-damam lekhapper baqqodesh yotsi el-mikhuts lammakhaneh vesarefu va'esh et-orotam ve'et-besaram ve'et-pirsham

The bull of purgation offering and the goat of purgation offering whose blood was brought in to purge the Shrine shall be taken outside the camp; and their hides, flesh, and dung shall be consumed in fire.

vehassoref otam yekhabbes begadayw verakhats et-besaro bammayim ve'akhare-khen yavo el-hammakhaneh

The one who burned them shall wash their clothes and bathe in water—and after that may re-enter the camp.

vehayetah lakhem lekhuqqat olam bakhodesh hashevi'i be'asor lakhodesh te'annu et-nafshotekhem vekhol-melakhah lo ta'asu ha'ezrakh vehagger haggar betokhekhem

And this shall be to you a law for all time: In the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall practice self-denial; and you shall do no manner of work, neither the citizen nor the alien who resides among you.

ki-vayyom hazzeh yekhapper alekhem letaher etkhem mikkol khattotekhem lifne Adonai titharu

For on this day atonement shall be made for you to purify you of all your sins; you shall be pure before GOD.

shabbat shabbaton hi lakhem ve'innitem et-nafshotekhem khuqqat olam

It shall be a sabbath of complete rest for you, and you shall practice self-denial; it is a law for all time.

vekhipper hakkohen asher-yimshakh oto va'asher yemalle et-yado lekhahen takhat aviv velavash et-bigde habbad bigde haqqodesh

The priest who has been anointed and ordained to serve as priest in place of his father shall make expiation. He shall put on the linen vestments, the sacral vestments.

vekhipper et-miqdash haqqodesh ve'et-ohel mo'ed ve'et-hammizbeakh yekhapper ve'al hakkohanim ve'al-kol-am haqqahal yekhapper

He shall purge the innermost Shrine; he shall purge the Tent of Meeting and the altar; and he shall make expiation for the priests and for all the people of the congregation.

vehayetah-zzot lakhem lekhuqqat olam lekhapper al-bene yisra'el mikkol-khattotam akhat bashanah vayya'as ka'asher tsivvah Adonai et-mosheh

This shall be to you a law for all time: to make atonement for the Israelites for all their sins once a year. And Moses did as GOD had commanded him.
