vayedabber Adonai el-mosheh bemidbar sinay be'ohel mo'ed be'ekhad lakhodesh hasheni bashanah hashenit letsetam me'erets mitsrayim lemor

On the first day of the second month, in the second year after the exodus from the land of Egypt, GOD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the Tent of Meeting, saying:

se'u et-rosh kol-adat bene-yisra'el lemishpekhotam levet avotam bemispar shemot kol-zakhar legulgelotam

Take a census of the whole Israelite community by the clans of its ancestral houses, listing the names, every male, head by head.

mibben esrim shanah vamalah kol-yotse tsava beyisra'el tifqedu otam letsivotam attah ve'aharon

You and Aaron shall record them by their groups, from the age of twenty years up, all those in Israel who are able to bear arms.

ve'ittekhem yihyu ish ish lammatteh ish rosh levet-avotayw hu

Associated with you shall be a representative from every tribe, each one the head of his ancestral house.

ve'elleh shemot ha'anashim asher ya'amdu ittekhem liruven elitsur ben-shede'ur

These are the names of the men who shall assist you: From Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur.

leshimon shelumi'el ben-tsurishadday

From Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai.

lihudah nakhshon ben-amminadav

From Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab.

leyissashkhar netanel ben-tsu'ar

From Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar.

lizvulun eli'av ben-khelon

From Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon.

livne yosef le'efrayim elishama ben-ammihud limnasheh gamli'el ben-pedahtsur

From the sons of Joseph: from Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud; from Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur.

levinyamin avidan ben-gidoni

From Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni.

ledan akhi'ezer ben-ammishadday

From Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai.

le'asher pagi'el ben-okhran

From Asher, Pagiel son of Ochran.

legad elyasaf ben-de'u'el

From Gad, Eliasaph son of Deuel.

lenaftali akhira ben-enan

From Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan.

elleh (qryy) [qeru'e] ha'edah nesi'e mattot avotam rashe alfe yisra'el hem

Those are the elected of the assembly, the chieftains of their ancestral tribes: they are the heads of the contingents of Israel.

vayyiqqakh mosheh ve'aharon et ha'anashim ha'elleh asher niqqevu beshemot

So Moses and Aaron took those men who were designated by name,

ve'et kol-ha'edah hiqhilu be'ekhad lakhodesh hasheni vayyityaldu al-mishpekhotam levet avotam bemispar shemot mibben esrim shanah vamalah legulgelotam

and on the first day of the second month they convoked the whole community, who were registered by the clans of their ancestral houses—the names of those aged twenty years and over being listed head by head.

ka'asher tsivvah Adonai et-mosheh vayyifqedem bemidbar sinay

As GOD had commanded Moses, so he recorded them in the wilderness of Sinai.

They totaled as follows: The descendants of Reuben, Israel’s first-born, the registration of the clans of their ancestral house, as listed by name, head by head, all males aged twenty years and over, all who were able to bear arms—

those enrolled from the tribe of Reuben: 46,500.

those enrolled from the tribe of Simeon: 59,300.

those enrolled from the tribe of Gad: 45,650.

those enrolled from the tribe of Judah: 74,600.

Of the descendants of Issachar, the registration of the clans of their ancestral house, as listed by name, aged twenty years and over, all who were able to bear arms—

those enrolled from the tribe of Issachar: 54,400.

Of the descendants of Zebulun, the registration of the clans of their ancestral house, as listed by name, aged twenty years and over, all who were able to bear arms—

those enrolled from the tribe of Zebulun: 57,400.

those enrolled from the tribe of Asher: 41,500.

bene naftali toledotam lemishpekhotam levet avotam bemispar shemot mibben esrim shanah vamalah kol yotse tsava

[Of] the descendants of Naphtali, the registration of the clans of their ancestral house as listed by name, aged twenty years and over, all who were able to bear arms—

pequdehem lematteh naftali sheloshah vakhamishim elef ve'arba me'ot

those enrolled from the tribe of Naphtali: 53,400.

elleh happequdim asher paqad mosheh ve'aharon unesi'e yisra'el shenem asar ish ish-ekhad levet-avotayw hayu

Those are the enrollments recorded by Moses and Aaron and by the chieftains of Israel, who were twelve in number, one from each ancestral house.

vayyihyu kol-pequde vene-yisra'el levet avotam mibben esrim shanah vamalah kol-yotse tsava beyisra'el

All the Israelites aged twenty years and over, enrolled by ancestral houses, all those in Israel who were able to bear arms—

vayyihyu kol-happequdim shesh-me'ot elef usheloshet alafim vakhamesh me'ot vakhamishim

all who were enrolled came to 603,550.

vehaleviyyim lematteh avotam lo hotpaqedu betokham

The Levites, however, were not recorded among them by their ancestral tribe.

vayedabber Adonai el-mosheh lemor

For GOD had spoken to Moses, saying:

akh et-matteh levi lo tifqod ve'et-rosham lo tissa betokh bene yisra'el

Do not on any account enroll the tribe of Levi or take a census of them with the Israelites.

ve'attah hafqed et-haleviyyim al-mishkan ha'edut ve'al kol-kelayw ve'al kol-asher-lo hemmah yisu et-hammishkan ve'et-kol-kelayw vehem yesharetuhu vesaviv lammishkan yakhanu

You shall put the Levites in charge of the Tabernacle of the Pact, all its furnishings, and everything that pertains to it: they shall carry the Tabernacle and all its furnishings, and they shall tend it; and they shall camp around the Tabernacle.

uvinsoa hammishkan yoridu oto haleviyyim uvakhanot hammishkan yaqimu oto haleviyyim vehazzar haqqarev yumat

When the Tabernacle is to set out, the Levites shall take it down, and when the Tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up; any outsider who encroaches shall be put to death.

vekhanu bene yisra'el ish al-makhanehu ve'ish al-diglo letsivotam

The Israelites shall encamp troop by troop, each [household] with its division and each under its standard.

vehaleviyyim yakhanu saviv lemishkan ha'edut velo-yihyeh qetsef al-adat bene yisra'el veshameru haleviyyim et-mishmeret mishkan ha'edut

The Levites, however, shall camp around the Tabernacle of the Pact, that wrath may not strike the Israelite community; the Levites shall stand guard around the Tabernacle of the Pact.

vayya'asu bene yisra'el kekhol asher tsivvah Adonai et-mosheh ken asu

The Israelites did accordingly; just as GOD had commanded Moses, so they did.
