Illustration for the Biblical Hebrew word misped

Grief in the Bible is rarely quiet. Misped is the wailing you can hear across the threshing floor — so loud the Canaanites watching it renamed the place after the sound.

“And they wailed there a great and very heavy wailing, and he made seven days of mourning for his father. (Genesis 50:10)”

Think of `misped` as a sound that leaves a mark on the map. The wailing was so great, the Canaanites renamed the place after it.
