kindred, birthplace · noun, feminine

Also spelled in English: moledeth, mowledeth

Illustration for the Biblical Hebrew word moledet

God tells Abram to leave his country, his moledet and his father's house, in that order, peeling him away from the outside in. Moledet is the middle ring: the whole tangle of people you happened to be born among.

וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוָה אֶל־אַבְרָם לֶךְ־לְךָ מֵאַרְצְךָ וּמִמּוֹלַדְתְּךָ וּמִבֵּית אָבִיךָ אֶל־הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר אַרְאֶךָּ

“The LORD said to Abram: Go from your land, from your kindred, and from your father's house, to the land that I will show you. (Genesis 12:1)”

Where is your moledet, and who in it would you find hardest to leave?
