סֹלְלָהsolelah meaning in Biblical Hebrew

siege ramp · noun, feminine
Illustration for the Biblical Hebrew word solelah

When an ancient army could not scale a stone wall, it brought baskets and poured the surrounding earth against it until the ramp met the battlements.

לָכֵן כֹּה־אָמַר יְהוָה אֶל־מֶלֶךְ אַשּׁוּר לֹא יָבֹא אֶל־הָעִיר הַזֹּאת וְלֹא־יוֹרֶה שָׁם חֵץ וְלֹא־יְקַדְּמֶנָּה מָגֵן וְלֹא־יִשְׁפֹּךְ עָלֶיהָ סֹלְלָה׃

“Therefore thus says the LORD concerning the king of Assyria: he shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with a shield, nor pour a siege ramp against it. (2 Kings 19:32)”

Connect סֹלְלָה (solelah) with the verb שָׁפַךְ (to pour): earth poured basket by basket from the root ס־ל־ל, meaning to heap up.
