שיכּורshiker meaning in Yiddish

drunkard, drunk · noun (masc.), adjective

Also spelled in English: shicker, shikker

Illustration for the Yiddish word shiker

Mind the vowel: in Yiddish it's shiker, not the Hebrew shikor. And when one too many turns into far too many, we say ער איז שיכּור ווי לוט — er iz shiker vi Lot, drunk as Lot, after the Lot of the Bible and his own trouble with wine.

דער פּויער איז אַהיים געגאַנגען שיכּור פֿון מאַרק.

“The peasant went home drunk from the market.”

Think of a time you've seen someone described as 'shiker' – was it with humor or concern?
