פּלאָנטערן
plontern
to tangle, muddle, or make a mess of things · verb
Illustration for the Yiddish word plontern

This is the word for when someone opens their mouth to fix a situation and somehow makes it three times worse. Not lying, not stupid — just hopelessly, magnificently muddling everything together like yarn in the hands of a nervous cat.

ער האָט אַזוי פּלאָנטערט מיט זײַנע דערקלערונגען, אַז קײנער האָט גאָרנישט פֿאַרשטאַנען.

He tangled things up so badly with his explanations that nobody understood anything at all.

Think of the last time someone's 'helpful' explanation left you more confused than before they started.
